Netflix vs Wavve vs Coupang Play — An Honest Comparison

I subscribed to all three platforms for 3 months. Here's what I found.

I Subscribed to All Three at Once

"Do I really need all of them?" — that question led to an experiment. Three months of Netflix, Wavve, and Coupang Play running simultaneously. About 35,000 won per month total. The price of seven cups of coffee.

The short answer: no, you don't need all three. But which combination works best depends on who you are.

Netflix — Still the Content King

13,500 won per month. The most expensive of the three. But in terms of content volume and quality, it still feels like number one. Korean dramas, Japanese anime, American documentaries, European thrillers — it's got everything. I watched 47 titles over three months, the most of any platform. It's the one where you least often think "there's nothing to watch."

The downsides: weak on Korean variety shows, and new Korean movies take forever to show up. Often 6 months to a year after theatrical release. And the price keeps creeping up.

Wavve — Great for Your Parents' House

10,900 won per month. The biggest draw is live streaming from Korea's three major broadcast networks. You won't miss shows like "I Live Alone" or "Running Man" the next day. Their original content has gotten pretty decent too.

But international content is weak, and the UI feels clunky compared to Netflix. Search is frustrating — type "Korean comedy movie" and you get a flood of irrelevant results. The recommendation algorithm isn't refined either, so you end up wondering "why is this being recommended?" more often than you'd like.

Coupang Play — Unbeatable Value

7,890 won per month, and that includes Rocket Wow membership. Free shipping, Rocket Fresh, Coupang Eats discounts, plus OTT bundled in — the actual OTT cost works out to maybe 2,000-3,000 won.

(Honestly, if you're already a Rocket Wow member, the OTT is basically free.)

Sports streaming is the killer feature. During soccer and baseball season, my watch time spikes dramatically. The content library is the smallest of the three. But when you factor in the Rocket Wow perks, the OTT is just a bonus.

Streaming Quality and App Experience

All three support 4K, but actual streaming quality is most stable on Netflix. Bitrates differ, so even "4K" feels different across platforms. Coupang Play had intermittent freezing issues.

Over three months, I had to force-quit the app 4 times for Coupang, 2 for Wavve, and 0 for Netflix.

Netflix's real competitive advantage isn't the content itself — it's the ability to find stuff you'll actually like. "How did it know I'd enjoy this?" is a feeling that comes up surprisingly often.

The Account Sharing Situation

Netflix has cracked down on sharing — adding an extra member costs 5,000 won per month. Sharing with parents runs to 18,500 won. Wavve's premium plan allows 4 simultaneous streams, while Coupang Play only allows 1. If you're sharing with family, Wavve's concurrent access policy is the most generous.

What I Did After 3 Months

If I had to keep just one, Netflix. But I settled on Netflix + Coupang Play. Netflix for dramas and movies, Coupang Play for sports and value. About 20,000 won per month.

I kept Wavve thinking I'd use it at my parents' place occasionally, but ended up canceling a month later. Turns out they watch variety shows on regular TV anyway.

Subscribing to all three was definitely wasteful. Three months of experimentation proved that.
